Love, Probably - A Green Lantern Corps AU Fan Fic

by Fin Laena

Summary: Slyggians are a rational, logic-minded people; none so more than Salaak.

That is, until he experiences something he cannot rationalize away so easily: the mortifying ordeal of being known.

Notes: This is my first Green Lantern fanwork in almost 15 years; suffice to say I’ve had to do a lot of catching up since I stopped reading in 2013 lmao. (I’m still catching up on the newer Earth Lanterns -Simon, Jessica, Jo, and Keli- so they don't really have a role in this particular fic.)

That said, this comic is set in its own, wholly separate universe from the comics or any spin-off media (let’s call it “Earth-1126” for now) and it’s basically a mix of headcanons and carte blanche from various continuities (i.e. Ghi’ata is present and also still very much alive); some comic events may be referenced but they’re unimportant for this particular story. (i.e. referencing the 1980's Englehart-Staton run, etc) If you're expecting this to be canon compliant, you're gonna be disappointed.

This comic is being cross-posted on Tumblr and AO3, too. Pages are done in batches of 5 at a time due to Life(tm). I dunno how many pages this will end up being, tbbh.

Anyhow, thank you for reading this incredibly self-indulgent fan comic that’s been slowly rotating in my head like a rotisserie chicken for the past 15 years and has only now become an actual story.

I don't want this journal to be trauma dumping offline stuff but I also don't want it to become a dumping ground for me bitching about a certain fandom every time something comes up.

That said, it's looking pretty likely I'll be stepping away from things around the beginning of next year. Not naming anything specifically, but I'm at a point where nothing is bringing me joy anymore and I don't need to constantly have things bringing me down when I don't need it these days. I'll try talking it over with some friends, but admittedly I don't trust anyone either. I sure as shit don't want to discuss this with my sister because she'll immediately leap to conclusions and extremes and all kinds of bullshit.

After now seeing some discourse that vaguely implied that Kat Kingsley (one of the writers of Warframe) should be cancelled because she apparently committed the crime of writing dark romance, I've come to the conclusion that Warframe is becoming a Modern Day Fandom that's Like That(tm) and no, I don't think I like it.

But I knew it, I knew something like this would happen the moment they introduced the Protoframes and a romance system via KIM.

I have no horse in the whole pro/anti shipping race other than the horse that stomps on the heads of everyone else because I have a life and bigger things to be upset over compared to them (caring 24/7 for a terminally ill parent does tend to put things into perspective damn fast), but if you legit believe that what an author writes is a reflection of what they actually believe, especially when it comes to gray or bad characters, you need to either find a religion that has you put others before you, get a life, touch grass, or a combination of all three.

Like, fuck, what the hell has happened to fandom? I mean, these elements have kinda always been there, but it wasn't until Steven Universe roared onto the scene that this kind of bullshit got kicked up to 11, and then got kicked up to 12 during the pandemic and/or Voltron: LD. Sheesh.

So, the age and fandom discourse came up again the other day. It's this discourse that's made me want to step away from fandom when I hit 40, seriously. I'm getting to be too old for this shit, man. It ain't worth it anymore.

I've spent the better part of 25 years under the radar, interested in the characters that the majority of fans never give 2 shits about, and have wasted so much time, effort, and energy into futile fannish pursuits.

To be brutally honest, I'm at a fork in the road with my life right now due to offline matters and am going to have to make some tough asf choices in the months ahead. Hell, I never wanted to make it to 40 in general, either, but life had other plans.

Maybe the kids have a point about being too old to be in fandoms.

Sometimes, the casual misogyny in the fashion doll collecting community is something else. Female designers get shit on a lot harder than men do, from what I've seen. Plus, there's the whole deal with MGA favoring male doll influencers for the Mirror Mi launch event.

idk why people are so hesitant to call this shit out when it happens but wygd.

There was some discourse that happened recently in the WF fandom and all I have to say is...

That's exactly why I've moved on to Green Lantern lmao.

I don't feel like getting into it, but it basically sums up why I no longer have any joy or fun in drawing Warframe stuff these days. It ain't worth the time and effort anymore. The stuff I like to do and focus on is long out of style and favor with people and I've had people basically yell at me for not drawing stuff like Protoframe shit and whatnot.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
